Kokanee Fishing Forums

Help Support Kokanee Fishing Forums:

Most of the time I fish either Lucky Peak or Arrow Rock. On both lakes pinks and greens are the "go to" colors. I rarely fish either. I don't want to be pulling what everyone else is. I want to give the fish something different. I understand that the fish can see and be attracted to different colors at different depths. When we are fishing and they are biting I try to change up my color selection to see what colors I can catch em on. To build confidence in different colors. One of our last trips out we caught them on pink, chartreuse, peach, orange, blue, white, clear, and purple. We boated over 40 kokes. We started out using 4 different scents and it didn't take long before we narrowed it down to 1. We boated all but 3 of those fat Arrow Rock kokes using a vanilla scented corn. On that particular day I don't think we caught more that 5 kokes on 1 color. I talked to a few guys at that ramp that said the fishing was really tough and found out that they only pulled pink and greens all day............

I've been fishing for 64 years ( I was told I caught my first fish when I was 5 out of Putah Creek where Berryessa Reservoir is now) and there are some things that I strongly believe about the subject and forums like this.
1. You can never know how much real knowledge and experience people have who are only known to you on the internet.
2. You can never know if there is a hidden agenda that is the real reason some people say what they say.
3. Salmonids are a lot like shad in that they seem fickle about color. They can seem to be keyed in on a certain color or color combination for minutes, hours, days or much longer but they seem to eventually shift away from the killer color or finish.
4. Something different that they haven't seen a million times is often the best color to use.
5. People who write books or say that they know what fish see or think are immediately suspect. Humans know about as much about what fish think as fish know about outboard motors.
6. Although I've fished a lot in my life and caught quite a few fish there are many days when I could swear that "Fish" are mystical creatures like Unicorns and the Sasquatch. On second thought, Sasquatch may be real because I'm pretty sure my last wife was more than half Sasquatch.
Face to face over a beverage you can separate the BS from the buckwheat and there are very few people who, if you talk to them long enough, don't provide something new or thought provoking that make your day.
