I want to make some of my own hoochies. What size line and hooks? Also what brand skirts are best and what colors should I get?

Check out the tackle craft forum and read some of the hootchie source posts for where to get the bodies. Also, if you look at the poll on this forum, you'll see that smaller is more popular than bigger. I use 12 lbs test for my kokanee leaders and just recently switched to #4 red sickle hooks for my hooks. Lots of stuff to see on the tackle craft forum if you want to start making some of your own stuff.

Here are some I made last year with Crystal Basin Tackle bodies, Cabelas tinsel skirt and my own painted blades.

Chad -
A good brand of hoockies are Yama****a (a product of Japan distributed by gold star). I like the 1.2 and 1.5 inch sizes that are available in a variety of colors. The various pinks and other popular kokanee colors that come in glow, double glow, and UV enhanced versions.

Most folks fish then with double hook rigs as pictured SuperD's photo using several beads (I like glow in dark, pink, or red beads) as spacers so that the hoochie rides above the hooks. Most of the hoochies I fish are simple rigs of just the hoochie and beads and hooks. Since they have no action of their own short leaders (9 to 11 inches) allow the movement from the dodger to be transferred to the hoochie.

In addition to just the simple hoochie rig adding a spinner as shown by SuperD is a good option. Other options beside the spinner are smilie blades and I have also had success using a large sequin (cup face forward) to add some movement..

BTW
Use 10 or 12# leaders to tie your rigs.

Good luck.

Here's a few things i've used on hoochies. The bobber stops can be used for hook set-back adjustability and the soft glow beads and pom-poms won't melt into the rubber skirt like plastic beads do over time. The pom-poms need to be threaded on the line with a needle and can be purchased at most craft stores. Also...they can be saturated with scent.
