Hey everybody,

I'm new to the west side of the state and I miss the fun I had on Loon Lake still-fishing for kokes at night. Loon also has a 10 fish bonus limit like Stevens.

Has anyone had experience here?
Is it legal on Stevens? or American?

Thanks,
Dave

This is night fishing last year at Loon Lake.

There's a technique that the old timers taught me.

Does anybody do this night kokanee still-fishing here on the west side?

Welcome aboard.

Here on the 'wet' side there isn't much night fishing like at Loon or Deer Lakes. I grew up there spending my summers at Granite Pointe and as an 'old timer' kept myself out of a lot of trouble fishing for bass and macks in the day, and kokes at night.

This is an area of interest though for many people here at KFF and despite the looks I get at sports stores when I bring it up I'd love to bring this untapped sport over here. One of the major obstacles is public launch access after dusk.

Oh how I miss the rush of kokes racing to the top in the dark. My wife enjoyed going out then much more than the typical trolling over here.

Be sure to sign in on the roll call.-Mack

Hey Mack.
It's so good to hear from someone who knows the Granite Point NightFishing experience. Wifey and I spend a couple weeks at GP in a cabin every other year.
Got my 10 kokes in under 20 minutes one night!

Anyway, I drove up to Stevens today and spoke with folks, and the local police.
It's looking good for night use of the city launch. Yea!
They are picky about their regulations, so I'll be reading the city's Municipal codes etc.

I plan to be all legal and giving it a try soon. My success may be limited due to it being early in the season. We'll see.

I'll post more here if anything pans out.

Night fishing for Kokes? Has anyone tried this on the Gorge? What kind of techniques have you tried with sucess? Maybe this would work better on a lake that gets alot of wind during the day..

Will try Stevens at night soon, but need suggestions.

Hey Mack,

Do you think it's too early to try night fishing at Stevens?

Do you have any suggestions as to what depth to start at?

My experience, as you know, has always been fishing just up off the bottom at Loon in 30' ish water.

I do not use a depth or fishfinder, just length markers on my anchor ropes. It's a little work, but fishing's never really work.

Thanks,
Dave

I grew up fishing chatman lake a "private" owned lake close to Cheney last time I did it (20 yrs ago) we had a lantern in the boat, we used glow hooks (macks lures) and if I am not mistaken we used either corn, or what they called helgromites (sp?) the little things your find on river beds that use a small hollow stick or they make a tube shell from sand. Break the shell open hook the little bug up, get the hook glowing, drop down to the bottom and reeled up a few turns, wait for the tip to wiggle and set the hook. Would love to try it here on Merwin or Yale, but the problem I see is finding fish in shallow enough water to anchor. I do enjoy still fishing it is a lot more relaxing than playing dodge boat sometimes.

I will definitely be night fishing Stevens, maybe.

It's been over a month since I started this thread and I still haven't been up there to get the night-fishing for Kokes dialed in.

I'm not as young as I was, and I live in Redmond, so although I have everything I need, and have made multiple plans in my mind, I haven't gotten the rest of me to go along.

My mind plans on going tomorrow night, Wednesday, and launching well before sunset.

If I had a buddy who was commited to being there, my excuses wouldn't work any more.

We'll see.

When I was a kid, we used to night fish at Cushman. However, we did it a bit differently than you would at Loon or Deer. My dad worked for Tacoma City Light, and we used to fish off the face of the dam. We would start at sunset and finish when we limited or the bite turned off.

Granted, you're not going to be able to do this, but it shows that it's possible to find the night bite if you've got the location. In a normal water year, I'm thinking you could night fish at the head end of Cushman on the flats just off the river mouth. However, I read somewhere that the lake level was going to be way down this year, and that would put those flats out of the water.

When I was up on Yale last weekend (first time on that lake) there seemed to be a fairly long flat heading out directly in front of the launch at Yale park, and It looked like a small island to the west that might offer shallow enough water to anchor. Just thought of something though, I don't know if there is any access at night, the park closes as dusk. Any one have any information on a place to access the lake at night?
